The model for how children should learn to read upon which Movie Reader is based is quite different than the model often found in today's schools.
The usual method sounds very scientific. First, some educational theorist breaks down the skills involved in reading into a set of detailed subskills. Then students master those subskills one at a time. Finally, having mastered the subskills, students are allowed to try to put them all together and actually read. Children usually enjoy the initial stages of this program because it allows them to play with books, an activity which may seem quite adult to them. But as more time is spent on mechanics, their motivation drains away.
