Understanding Should Precede Reading

When students are able to understand and enjoy the stories in books they will be motivated to learn the skills required to read those books. We do not need to teach children to read in order to teach them to understand. We need to teach them to understand in order to read. Teaching children to understand movies is an easy way to get at the important issues of prediction, inference, and the use of world knowledge in understanding. When a child feels confident that he understands why people do what they do in various situations and confident that he knows how to recover when he is confused he is ready to become an avid understander of the world in which he lives.
